Hi there,
This week in our preschool classroom, we’ve been diving into a topic that always brings out the “ewws,” the giggles, and the wide-eyed curiosity — bugs! 🐛🦋🐜
Whether they’re crawling across the sidewalk or fluttering through the garden, bugs are a fascinating part of nature for little learners. I love how studying insects helps kids explore science, practice observation skills, and build vocabulary — all while having fun.
Why Bugs Are a Great Preschool Theme
Bugs are everywhere and so accessible for young children to observe. A few reasons I love this unit:
- Encourages curiosity about nature
- Supports science skills: sorting, comparing, and observing
- Builds descriptive vocabulary (think “slimy,” “tiny,” “fuzzy,” or “wiggly”!)
- Great for integrating counting, art, and gross motor play

We kept things hands-on, simple, and full of movement:
- Went on a bug hunt with magnifying glasses ️️
- Sang “The Ants Go Marching” and practiced counting
- Created fingerprint ladybug art using red and black ink pads
- Shared a beloved storybook that’s always a hit in our classroom

The kids were especially fascinated by how caterpillars become butterflies — there were lots of “wows” when we looked at real chrysalis photos!

Try This: Bug Talk Prompts
Here are a few open-ended questions I use with my class while coloring or observing bugs:
- “What colours do you see on this bug?”
- “Where do you think this bug lives?”
- “What would you name this bug if it was your pet?”
- “Can you move like a wiggly worm or a bouncy grasshopper?”
These kinds of questions spark creative thinking and language development while keeping the learning light and fun.
Whether you’re a teacher, homeschooler, or parent looking to explore nature with your little ones, bugs are an awesome way to connect kids with science and storytelling.
I hope you enjoy this free printable and feel inspired to let your learners explore the tiny creatures that share our world.
Happy teaching!
