Encouraging Imaginative Thinking in Children- Free Roll a Story Printable

Young children are naturally imaginative. Whether they are pretending to be astronauts, creating magical worlds, or telling stories about talking animals, creative thinking helps children make sense of the world around them.

Imaginative play and storytelling are important parts of early childhood development. They help children develop language skills, problem-solving abilities, confidence, and social-emotional understanding. When children create their own stories, they learn that their ideas have value and that there is no single “right” answer.

One simple way to encourage creative thinking is through story creation activities. Our free Roll a Story printable makes storytelling fun and engaging for preschool and kindergarten children.

How the Roll a Story Activity Works

Children take turns rolling a dice three times:

Roll 1: The number it lands on will determine the character

Roll 2: The number it lands on will be the setting from the chart.

Roll 3: The number it lands on will be the problem.

Once all three elements have been selected, children use their imagination to create a unique story.

For example:

  • Character: A friendly dinosaur
  • Setting: A pirate ship
  • Problem: Lost a treasure map

Children can then create a story about how the dinosaur searches for the missing treasure map while sailing the seas.

Every roll creates a different combination, making each story completely unique.

Benefits of Storytelling Activities

Storytelling helps children:

  • Build vocabulary and language skills
  • Develop sequencing and narrative skills
  • Strengthen creativity and imagination
  • Improve listening and communication skills
  • Practice speaking in front of others
  • Build confidence in sharing ideas

This roll-a-story idea looks really fun. I like when there is just enough of a prompt to start, but kids still get to make the story weird or funny in their own way. A picture or coloring page can do that too.
