What is Mid- Autumn Festival?

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a traditional Chinese celebration. It occurs on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar. This usually happens in late September or early October. It’s a time for family reunions. It is deeply connected with the full moon, which is at its brightest and roundest during this time.

The festival is rooted in ancient harvest traditions and lunar worship. It’s marked by several key customs:

1. Mooncakes: These are traditional pastries with various fillings like red bean paste, lotus seed paste, or salted egg yolks. They symbolize completeness and reunion
2. Lanterns: Colorful lanterns are often used in celebrations, and children might carry them in parades or display them in homes and public spaces.
3. Moon Gazing: Families gather to appreciate the beauty of the full moon, which is a symbol of peace and prosperity.
4. Family Reunions: Much like Thanksgiving in Western cultures, it’s a time for families to come together and enjoy a meal.

The festival also has various myths and legends linked to it. These include the famous tale of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, and her lover Hou Yi, the archer. Celebrations and traditions can vary by region, but the overall themes of unity and gratitude are central to the festival.
