Learning numbers 1 to 5 is often one of the first mathematical concepts children encounter, and it’s amazing to see how quickly they begin to grasp these foundational skills.
As a preschool teacher, I get the incredible joy of watching children explore the world around them and take their first steps into the world of numbers.

- Comparing and contrasting: Children learn to identify which number is bigger or smaller, helping them develop early problem-solving skills.
- Pattern recognition: Recognizing number patterns is an early step toward understanding more complex math concepts like addition, subtraction, and even multiplication later on.
Making Numbers 1 to 5 Fun and Engaging
At the preschool level, it’s important to keep learning hands-on and playful.
Children at this age learn best through exploration, and incorporating a variety of fun activities is key to keeping them engaged.
Here are a few of my go-to techniques:
- Songs and Rhymes: Kids love to sing! Incorporating number songs or rhymes helps children remember the numbers while also building rhythm and language skills. I often sing simple counting songs like “Five Little Ducks” or “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe.” These songs create a fun environment while reinforcing number recognition.
- Number Recognition with Real-Life Objects: One of my favorite activities is to use everyday objects like blocks, buttons, or even fruits to reinforce counting. We might count how many blocks are in a stack or how many apples are in a basket, giving the children a tangible connection to each number.
- Find and Color Worksheets: Worksheets are a great way for children to practice their fine motor skills while also engaging in number recognition.
